No Year’s Resolutions: My 2022 Goals | Rosie Abigail

This is not a resolutions post. Not ‘new year, new me’ here! In fact, I am resolved to say I hate the phrase ‘New Year’s Resolutions’!

The idea of New Year’s Resolutions seem to come with a kind of social stigma; that you are only doing them because it’s a new year and that you’ll end up failing them anyway. If you are a die hard New Year’s Resolution lover, more power to you friend! But for me, I hear the phrase and instantly recoil.

Maybe that’s down to the fact I’ve never had a successful New Year’s Resolution. I’ve never stuck to them, and not for want of trying! I think that as the year progresses, and it is no longer a new year, the novelty of changing your life/losing weight/saving money/teaching your parrot to speak, fades away. However, there are things I want to change and to introduce in my life, so I’ve chosen to frame them in a new way. Goodbye New Year’s Resolutions, hello Yearly Goals. 

“Setting yearly goals at the start of a new year? Ground-breaking.” Look, I never said I was re-inventing the wheel. I’m all about long-term changes, not short-term fixes, so I am framing my goals in a way that suits me! With that, let’s move away from me slamming New Year’s Resolutions (into the ground, where they belong) and into my goals for 2022! I’ve split my goals into five areas of my life – blog, wellness, house, travel, and general life – as these are the areas that I want the most change. Without further ado, let’s delve into my goals for 2022!

Life

Get married!

  • Okay, this is kind of a cheat goal because it is actually happening (the money spent on it already would confirm that). You know how you put something on your to-do list that you’ve already done just to be able to cross it off? This is the yearly goal version of that. Only seven months to go!

Adopt a cat

  • Adopting a cat has been a dream of mine for years. I would be just as happy to have a dog, I love both of them. Buuuut, if you throw work commitments and the house I am renovating into the mix, a dog is not on the cards right now. But a shelter cat? 2022 is the perfect year! My fiancé and I are now both addicted to looking at the local adoption shelters, and I have burst into tears thanks to high cute levels on at least three occasions already. 

Be more in tune with my style

  • Stylistically, I felt like a wet sponge for a lot of 2021. One of the cheap Poundland ones at that. With lockdowns, working from home, and moving house, my everyday uniform consisted of paint splattered leggings, no bra, and a holey band tee. Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and place for that lewk, but I had forgotten the joy a good outfit can bring. It’s time to tap back into it. 

Blog

Post three times a week

  • This is probably the most challenging goal of the year, but it’s a needed challenge. I can feel my brain yearning for a little push, something to keep me on my creative toes. Sometimes you just need a challenge or a goal to get the best out of you.

Make some moh-nay

  • Well, this will come with time and effort, but I’m starting in a good place – I’m already making a little bit of money from the blog! Oh we love ad-sense. So, I’d just like to double my monthly earnings from the blog. It’s a small goal for a small income but it’s a goal all the same!

Become friends will Reels and Tiktoks

  • Alas, Reels and TikToks do not come naturally to me. I’ve made a start but I’d rather be typing away or taking a flatlay. However, I get such a sense of achievement when I make one that I just want to make more. Plus, I spend far too much of my time on Reels and TikTok so I may as well contribute to my obsession. 

House

Finish decorating the spare room/office

  • We started this project on 30th December and expected to have wallpapered the room by now. It turns out completely stripping, cleaning, filling, and prepping the walls of a Victorian house is hard work, especially if you’ve got a sprained ankle. Still, we are having a new carpet fitting at the end of January so fingers crossed I’ll be wallpapering my dream office space soon. Enter pastel paint, new art prints, nick-nacks, and books.

Start on kitchen demo

  • This is our big post-wedding project. As in BIG. As in living with a rubble-filled kitchen for a few months. Cooking on a camping stove, fridge living in the lounge, colossal-size renovation. We have a very loooooong house with downstairs being broken up into odd shaped rooms. So we’ve decided to knock it (mostly) through to create a gorgeous open plan kitchen-diner. Realistically, we can’t do it all in one go (money money money), but we can make a start!

Make my bedroom a more relaxing place

  • Technically we’ve decorated our bedroom (but it does need a lot of work later on in life – new ceiling, new windows, new wallpaper, new everything…) The problem right now is that it doesn’t feel that cosy. However, I do have a plan. A) Clear out a lot of clothes and free up storage. B) Get rid of clunky storage. C) Thrift a glorious rattan chair to pop in my window and make it my zen-central. Challenge, accepted. 

Wellness

Make working out a part of my life

  • Ugggghhhh, I’ve been wanting to do this for years and have failed every time. That’s because I’ve always tied working out in with weight loss. This year, I’m treating working out as a necessity for my health, like drinking water or taking my medication or brushing my teeth. I started with this mindset earlier in 2021 and it was a game changer. I started to actually feel good in the day. Because I exercised? Who knew that it was good for you?!

Morning pages

  • Last summer, with the sun streaming in through the window and a cup of hot coffee on my desk, I was a journaling machine. I wrote three pages of my morning pages each day, just taking ten minutes for myself. It was blissful. I got all of my busy thoughts out of my brain, felt more focused, more creative. And then, as it got darker and the mornings harder to get out of bed, the journaling teetered away. Well, not this time!

Travel

Go on our honeymoon

  • Rory, my fiancé, and I have booked to go to Florida in November for our honeymoon. COVID pending of course… With the wedding in July, that leaves us just over a three month gap until the honeymoon. Why, you ask? Going away in hurricane season surrounded by screaming children? I don’t think so. So we’ll be having two weeks at Coronado Spring resort, tickets to Disney and Universal Studios, days of golf and spa trips, all in blissful 25 degree heat and sun. It can’t come soon enough. 

Girl’s trip

  • In 2020, we had planned a girl’s trip to Dublin. Cancelled. In 2021, we talked about getting away from a camping trip. Cancelled. In 2022, well, I’d just like to arrange a weekend away with my best friends, thank you! This year, I imagine we’ll stick to camping to save money, what with the wedding and honeymoon and rebuilding a house. But, I would love to book something ready for 2023. You hear that, universe? I’m going to book something, and it’s going to happen!

So, those are my goals for 2022! I’m keen to revisit them at the end of the year, to see how I did. I might even pop back to do a half-year review! Anyway, that’s looking too far into the future, let’s just work on these goals for now. Have you set any goals for the year? Heck, have you even set any New Year’s Resolutions?

  1. Wow these are some awesome goals and you have a ton of them! Right now I’m hoping to go from 300 blog followers to 500 🤣👍🏻 in 2022. I’m recovering from being dumped in December so I think it’s ok this year to set this small goal, and just survive and see where the wind takes me 💖 I look forward to more of your posts this year!!

  2. What a year you’re going to have, sounds like you have some amazing plans for 2022. I live in a Victorian cottage so know full well that old houses can be a lot of work but totally worth it in the long run. Glad you plan to post often on your blog too – always a great read 🙂

  3. Love this, as always! I agree, for me, setting goals feel more achievable than setting resolutions and it’s something you can constantly work towards 💪🏻

  4. Exercise is a panacea indeed, in that it helps me tremendously with my mental state, and with a more positive outlook, I tend to look at problems in a better light, and that just snowballs. Anyway, wishing you all the best with your goals!
