It’s the end of a cold and blustery month, and that can only mean one thing; it’s time for my monthly favourites! I’ve changed up these favourites a little bit by streamlining them into five categories, so do let me know what you think. Let’s start with my favourite category; books!
Books | Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
I am late to the Gaiman train, but I’m so glad I’ve jumped on! I’ve read three books by Neil Gaiman and this is my favourite one yet. This may be the Pratchett influence, but I’ll have to read some Pratchett to work that out… I’m currently halfway through Good Omens and am finding it a really enjoyable read. The no spoilers premise of Good Omens (based on the book blurb) is that an angel and a demon have to pair up due to the impending apocalypse and misplacement of the Antichrist (no big deal then). I catch myself chuckling out loud and smiling at the book, and find the characters so well written, and well, human, for other-earthly beings. As soon as I finish this book, it’s going to be time to give the TV adaptation a whirl!
Style | Vintage finds and ASOS purchases
You may recognise my first favourite if you read my recent post of what I got at a vintage kilo sale (which you can find here). I’m talking about this oversized, men’s short-sleeve button down in a what I can only call a jazzy pattern. I haven’t had time to wear it out and about in the world yet, but I know that this will be my go to casual top come March. Catch me at the bowling alley with my mom jeans and crimped hair.
I’ve also been loving two specific buys from ASOS this month; plum work trousers, and a teal midi skirt (the one in the photo above). They are both ASOS own brand items, and I picked them up because I needed some more smart items for my wardrobe (my rotation of blue jeans, black culottes, and navy dungarees are not the most office or event friendly). This month, I wore the plum coloured trousers on my return to work after a month of sick leave. They made me feel badass and put together, and really helped to carry me through the day. I plan to wear the midi skirt to some upcoming dinners and weekends away I’ve got planned, and as my go-to fancypants skirt.
Beauty & Skin Care | The Body Shop British Rose Face Mask
I was out buying gifts for various birthdays I know are coming up, and I got sucked into the wonder that is The Body Shop. I ended up buying three little pots of face masks that I really didn’t need, only because they were on offer (and that really didn’t save me that much). Still, I am glad I picked up a little pot of their British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask. At first, I had a niggling fear that it would feel like a plumping lip gloss (all gross and tingly), and nearly put it in a drawer to be gifted to someone else. But it’s actually very gentle and refreshing, and plumps the face in terms of moisture. It goes really well with the rest of my skin care routine, so congratulations Rose Face Mask; you’ve made it into the skin care bag!
Entertainment | Studio Ghibli
I whiled away a lot of this month in front of Netflix and the Playstation, thanks to being off sick for four weeks. I played Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (now my favourite PS4 game), broke out the Nintendo 3DS (Pokemon, of course), and watched Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez in one fell swoop. But the best thing I watched had to be Kiki’s Delivery Service. I already love Studio Ghibli films, with some favourites including Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind and Porco Rosso. So I was over the moon when I found out all of the films would be appearing on Netflix! As Kiki’s Delivery Service was one my boyfriend and I had never seen before, we settled down under blankets and pillows one afternoon and pressed play. It was whimsical, beautiful, and down right charming – everything you expect from a Ghibli film and more. It tells the story of a young witch who moves to a new town to complete her training, and uses her flying ability to create a delivery service. It’s a film that isn’t heavy to watch, it warms your heart, and was perfect watching for a rainy February afternoon.
Wildcard | Desk set-up
Finally, we have the last category; wildcard. This month, my wildcard choice is my desk set up! We’ve had to have a bit of work done to the window in my bedroom thanks to it cracking over the summer, meaning my desk has remained unused due to fear of water damage and other unpleasantness. With it (finally) being fixed and with a few weeks off under my belt, I took the time to organise it. Now I have a wonderful space to sit and write! I feel instantly relaxed when I sit at my desk; I light the candle, flip a new affirmation over, and feel at home. Once the desk space was cleared, I went out and bought myself an ivy plant which I just adore. By having my own, personal space to write and create, I am feeling so much more creative!
